What is the difference between a pro scooter and a regular scooter?

One of the top questions our team get is on the difference between a pro scooter and a regular scooter. With so many different types of scooter on the market, it can be hard to determine what type is best for you. In this blog we break down the three main types of scooters and their main functions.

Three Types of Scooters

The main three types of non-electric scooters are regular (kick) scooters, pro scooters and commuter scooters. Let's break down each see what the difference is between them.

Regular "Kick" Scooter

Purpose

Kick Scooters are mainly used for casual riding for fun! These scooters are designed for rides that are short to mid length distances. The best place to ride these scooters would be at home, your local neighborhood or park. Kick scooters also have cool features such as LED Lights. These scooters are not intended for long distance rides, rough terrain or tricks at the skatepark.

Intended Customer

The target consumer for a kick scooter is typically children starting at ages 3 years and up. Depending on the model, most kids age out of kick scooters at the age of 8 years old.

Product Features

  • Folding headtube
  • Plastic core wheels
  • Two-piece handle bar

Price Range

The price range for a kick scooter is lowest of the three types of scooters. Typically they range between $10 - $100 USD.

Pro Scooter

Purpose

Pro scooters are specifically made to handle the pressure of scooter stunts and tricks. While you can ride this type of scooter casually around the neighborhood, this scooter is made for the skatepark! This scooter is not for young children under the age of 3 years old or rough terrain.

Intended Customer

Children as young as 4 years old can be fitted for a pro scooter. There is no cap age for pro scooters, there are models that fit adults of all ages. If you are above the age of four, and you are looking to shred, then you can rock a pro scooter.

Product Features

  • Solid headtube
  • Alloy core wheels
  • One-piece bars
  • Longer/wider scooter decks
  • Pro scooters do not fold

All of these features are added to pro scooters to reduce failure points for tricks and jumps. If you tried to do stunts on a regular or commuter scooter, your risk for injury and scooter destruction is high.

Price Range

Pro scooters are the priciest type of scooter on this list. However, these are several different models and ranges of pro scooters that can fit in anyones budget. The price range for a pro scooter is between $60 - $300 USD.

Our Recommendations

Picking the correct pro scooter is a custom experience and different for each rider. Our recommendation varies based on your size, experience, and price range. To get the best recommendation, we suggest using our resources below:
