Scooters & Balance Bikes for Ages 4+

A first ride should be light enough to carry, low enough to feel safe, and simple enough that a four-year-old works it out in an afternoon. Everything here is chosen on that basis.

Where to start at age 4

Most four-year-olds are ready for a two-wheel scooter if they can already balance on a bike, and a balance bike if they cannot yet. The Flow 100 folding scooter is $34.99, weighs very little, and has a height-adjustable handlebar that grows with them. The My 1st ZBike balance bike is $69.99 and comes with a CPSC-approved helmet.

      Sizing without guesswork

Scooter bars should sit somewhere between the waist and the navel. Too high and a child fights the steering; too low and they stoop. The Flow 100 adjusts through that range for most riders from about 3 feet tall, which covers a typical four-year-old with room to grow.

      Built to survive a driveway

A steel frame, composite wheels and a rear fender brake. These are the parts that take the impact when a scooter is dropped rather than parked, which is what actually happens.

      When to move up

Once they are riding confidently and asking to try tricks, the pro range starts around age 6. There is no rush; a scooter that fits is worth more than one they will grow into.
